What is Free Access?

With free access to a TV provider’s content, you typically do not need a login or a subscription to watch their shows. As free over-the-air broadcast channels, CTV, City, CBC and Global do not risk any subscriber revenue by streaming online for free. However, they do show commercials, unless you pay a subscription fee (like CBC’s $4.99/month Gem). And CBC is also requiring a login for some of their free content, to collect basic demographic information on viewers and sell more lucrative targeted video ads.

What is Subscription?

As the name implies, subscriptions require you to pay a monthly fee to access their content. This is the model that all channels will transition to eventually, as fewer and fewer viewers subscribe to traditional cable/DSL/satellite packages. You can see all pricing information here, and even calculate what your monthly bill will be (before taxes).

About Peak TV Canada

Peak TV Canada Logo

We are living in a time of what has been called “peaktv,” which means simply that there has never been so much varied and quality programming produced in the 70-year history of what we call television. But with this creative boom has come a quandary for you the Canadian viewer: where is everything? Is it on broadcast? (CTV, CBC, ABC, NBC) Is it on specialty TV? (AMC, Showcase, FX) Maybe on pay TV? (HBO, Crave) Or now a streaming service? (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Crave and soon Disney). And to make it even more confusing, shows released in the U.S. can be on services we don’t get in Canada (Hulu, HBO Go) but might be carried here instead by a broadcaster or a specialty channel. It makes you want to give up and just watch a rerun of “Friends”, doesn’t it? But now Peak TV is here to help.

We’re cataloguing all the current scripted TV shows being produced today, and telling you where to find them here in Canada. Along the way we’ll also point you to reviews, trailers, user ratings and more. And if you are looking for what to binge-watch next, we’ll let you browse lists of the top-rated dramas, comedies and mini-series on the air today. So sit back and click/touch/tap your way to the land of Peak TV.

What is Authentication?

Authentication is the broadcast industry’s way of offering you streaming content over the Internet for free, provided you are a paying subscriber of their TV product (whether that’s through cable, DSL or satellite).

This is really a transition step before channels start offering you their shows directly over the Internet for a monthly subscription fee (as CBS is doing now in Canada with CBS All Access).

You must have a login/password for your TV provider’s site to see authenticated content. (Click here for a list of common providers’ sign up pages if you are not registered yet.)
